Lace Blocking Virgin

Blocking Kernel
I’ve already told you my approach for doing lace. Well I finally finished my first lace piece, and it’s now blocking.

Blocking Kernel
I purchased lace blocking wires from KnitPicks last month, and while simple in concept, I’ve never used anything like them before and I am not sure if I inserted them the best way.

Blocking Kernel
The Kernel scarf has an edging of 3 knit stitches on each side. I used this edge to hold the wires. The scarf is longer than a single wire, so I had to use 2 on each side.

Blocking Kernel
The ends have slight points, but I didn’t take pictures of them. I inserted a pin in each point to pull it down and exaggerate it.

Stay tuned tomorrow for the finished pictures!

Clara Parkes meets Jared Flood

Mitts
No not really. It’s just her Maine Morning Mitts done a la Jared Flood’s Turn a Square hat. I wanted to knit a manly version of the mitts for a man who likes purple.

Mitts
I am not exactly sure why I decided I would hold clementines while I took the picture of my hand (which is very difficult by the way). The plants are Selaginella mosses that were on sale at the grocery store last week. I love their lushness.

Mitts
I used a tubular bind off for the finger area. I like how it turned out.
Yarn: Cascade 220 Purple Heather, unknown Noro silk garden (I did take extra time to ensure the stretches of color stripes matched)
Pattern: Maine Morning Mitts

Size: I cast on 42 stitches instead of 33, made them an inch longer

Hats on a plate and food in the mail

cinquefoil hat
Like me you might have hundreds of patterns at your disposal. Bought, paid for, and just hanging out in your personal library. But have you checked out Twist Collective? (Pssst, winter issue up now!) They have some nice stuff!

Closeup on cinquefoil hat
When I saw the Cinquefoil pattern, I was intrigued even though I am not much of a hat person, much less a beret. But seeing the $8 kits on elann.com sealed the deal. Yup, $8 for 3 skeins of cashmere yarn.

cinquefoil hat on a plate
Mmmmm cashmere. On a plate. (It’s blocking now, and still damp.)

KnitPicks needles
I also bought some Knitpicks circs to make the hat. These are 16″ sizes 2 and 3, the sizes recommended for the hat. I didn’t think I had a large head, but this hat seems a little small. Good thing I bought more than one kit from elann! (Seriously – $8 for cashmere. Did I mention that?)

Kashi snack bar
In other news, I got a snack in the mail. If you watch their site, they typically have a freebie every month. Not cashmere, but still good!
