Auction Finds

Posted by mobarger on Aug-29-2009

We went to an auction today in PA, ironically right across the street from the Orwell Fiber Museum we visited a few weeks ago. Although we went there specifically to look at a tractor and some other equipment, I walked away with some fibery goodness.

Yarn collection
Isn’t this funky yarn? I have about 10 large balls of it.

Yarn collection
It’s 10-ply of different yarns, different weights. Some are almost novelty-ish.

Crocheted rug
I think the owner crocheted rugs.

I also purchased for $25 (no pix yet!) a Kenmore 117.97 Rotary Sewing Machine in the most beautiful case. The case has 3 drawers with lots of built-in hidey holes. It also has 2 wings that provide a lot of workroom. It turns out it is missing its power cord and foot pedal but it could be these parts are easy to find. I hope. Regardless for $25 I was thinking I could buy a replacement machine and use the case.

Gary bought a cordless drill and a tree stand. :)

JP Coats spool cabinet
We were standing next to the family of the estate. Their father had passed away in May and they were cleaning out the house to sell. We heard some great stories like how their mom received a .410 Over Under instead of an engagement ring and ended up buying her own diamond. This spool cabinet stood in the Cole Store at the end of the street but stayed in the family. It is dated 1900. The family’s son bid on it against a very aggressive buyer. Turned out he was bidding for a cousin, and the price was more than she was ready to pay. Final selling price? $1300.

Arrivals and Departures

A few goodies arrived this week in the mail.

TLE Anniversary Kit 2009

First off, The Loopy Ewe Anniversary kit. The pattern looks great and I can’t wait to get started! (Debbie O’Neill at Nutty Creations, “Poppycock”). The Lorna’s Laces yarn and the coffee mug are colored to match the Loopy Ewe’s headquarters’ colors.

Fal 09 IK

The Fall 09 issue of Interweave Knits. The Fall issue of just about any magazine is huge and spectacular and full of promise and this one is no different! Bandelier Socks and Farmers Market cardigan are my runaway faves.

Colorful Yarn

Some yarn from Colorful Yarn whom I read about on Wendyknits blog. It is incredibly vibrant. This is the “Berry” color.

WM Wasabi

Also vibrant is this skein of Wollmeise Wasabi I scored in a recent Loopy Ewe Wollmeise sneak-up. This yarn goes so fast when it is available. I was lucky enough to be at the computer when word went out it was online.

WM Barista from Liz!

And finally here is more Wollmeise, a color I have coveted and never been able to buy. Thank you to dear Liz who sent me a skein.

WM Kurbis

So departing Chez Rooster is this skein of Wollmeise Kurbis, a color that Liz has been coveting. I have to admit, the more I look at it, the more I covet it too! I will find you again Kurbis! Liz, enjoy!

Other People’s Stuff

STR Jul 09 Shipment

First off, the new installment of the Rocking Sock Club arrived this week. Reviews are mixed, I like it. The pattern looks very interesting. If you want better pix, I suggest you visit Turtlegirl’s blog, she always takes great pix of yarn! Each kit came with a different sticker – I like mine best!

Fiber Baristas Jul 09 Pennyrose Yarns Shelley

Fiber Baristas shipment came too! This is a generous skein and can almost be considered solid. Not sure if it says socks or scarf yet.

Stash Mosaic

Meanwhile I have to learn to stay away from the destashing forum on Ravelry. I’ve been a little … uh…. busy.

New Shoes

I also have this problem of reading other people’s blogs and shopping because of them. These shoes were first spotted on Knit Flix’s blog and I wanted a pair too! She also blogged about them here. Off I went to search for them, and found a pair my size, brand new, on eBay. So for $25 and free shipping, they were mine! They are not exactly my style but so cute! and so comfy!

So I am enamored of other people’s stuff. Luckily I have been able to avoid garage sales this summer, although I almost stopped at a couple the other day ….
